Welsh Premier League is yet to be finalised - Woosnam

The structure of next season's Principality Welsh Premier League is yet to be finalised, League Chairman, Phil Woosnam said on Sgorio on Monday evening

Despite the current member clubs voting to accept a 44 match season at a recent Special Clubs Meeting, Mr. Woosnam, told last night's programme that the structure wasn't 'set in tablets of stone'.

"I believe the final decision will not be made until the end of the season - until we know which clubs will be in the Super 12," he said.

"The final decision on the number of fixtures (next season) will probably go to the AGM at the end of the season."

Some clubs were already worried about the viability of a 44 match season with statements issued on their official websites and the recent inclement weather has increased those concerns.

With the 'Whiteout' last weekend, all of the Welsh Premier League fixtures were postponed bringing the number of matches postponed so far this season to 24.

And with the season due to end on 24 April, some clubs are already worried about a potential fixture backlog.

Woosnam also suggested that the Welsh Premier League may well look at other options of avoiding the worst of the winter months.

"I believe we could look at the option of a winter break for a couple of months and extend the season into May and June," he suggested.

"That would be a way of helping our European campaigns in the future too.

"Another thing that always crops up whenever we have this sort of inclement weather is the possibility of summer football," added Mr Woosnam.

"And I'm sure this will come onto the agenda again, especially when the league goes down to 10 clubs in a couple of years time."

It's interesting to note that of the current top ten in the League standings, the majority have previously indicated that they could be interested in a summer switch.
