Representing a new and positive initiative to respond to the growing needs of its 29 Member Leagues and 932 affiliated clubs, the EPFL has launched today the second edition of its Sport Law Bulletin.
Offering a new and relevant source of information on a wide range of issues of practical interest, the EPFL Sports Law Bulletin is an indispensable instrument to assist the football executives and decision-makers to meet the mounting challenges facing day-to-day Professional Football at the national and international level.
The second edition the EPFL Sports Law Bulletin covers the period of November and December of 2008 and addresses the main developments in the legal, regulatory and jurisprudential landscape. It includes a summary report of main sport-related events held at the EU level, such as the EU Sports Forum (Biarritz) and the 11th informal meeting of the Sports Ministers of the Council of Europe (Athens). Protection of Intellectual Property rights and Sports Betting Integrity are also highlighted, with the EPFL CEO emphasizing, in his editorial, the vital significance of these issues and urging the EU institutions and national Governments to place them higher in their political agenda to enable sport to protect the integrity of its competitions and ensure sports credibility and economic viability.
In this edition of the EPFL Sports Law Bulletin readers will also find an important overview on the principles recently approved by FIFA on youth development, the new format of the UEFA Europa League (former UEFA Cup), as well as a portray of most recent main cases ruled by the Court of Arbitration of Sport (CAS). Among others, reference is made to the so-called "Racist Chants case", involving the Spanish club Atletico de Madrid, as well as the "Al Kuwait Sporting Club and Vjatseslav Zahovaiko case", which reinforces the fundamental principle of contractual stability.
Finally, this edition opens the floor to articles of opinion by the Portuguese scholar Prof. José Manuel Meirim, on the brand new legislative framework of the professional leagues in Portugal, and by Miguel Maria Garcia Caba and Robert Pongracz, from the Spanish Liga Nacional de Futbol Profesional, on the impacts of the "Granada 74 case" to the current professional football landscape.
