EPFL distinguishes FAO General Director Jacques Diouf with Special Award
London, 06 October 2010 - On occasion of its 5th Anniversary, celebrated on the 6th of October in London, the EPFL awarded Dr. Jacques Diouf, General Director of the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO), with its 2009/2010 Special Award, in recognition for his outstanding work at the forefront of the fight against hunger.
Elected for the first time as FAO General Director on November of 1993, during is career Dr. Jacques Diouf has collected an impressive number of decorations and academic honours for the appreciable services rendered at the top of several international organisations and institutions. But the EPFL Special Award holds a unique meaning, as it will be the first ever received from a sporting organisation.
Since the signature of a Cooperation Agreement on 14 April 2008, both organisations have been working together in a series of successful initiatives to raise awareness on the raising problem of global hunger and starvation, which affect more than 1 billion people around the world .
Among various impacting activities jointly developed since then, the EPFL and its Member Leagues launched on May 2010, in Rome, the " 1 Billion Hungry Petition Campaign ", which will culminate with the organization of the second edition of EPFL/FAO European Match Day Against Hunger, an initiative which shall take place in the stadiums of more than 15 Professional Leagues all across Europe, on 23-24 October 2010, bringing together Leagues, clubs, players and referees with a strong message: let's put an end to hunger!
