President Message
“It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the eircom League of Ireland section of the EPFL website. We are very proud of our strong links to the EPFL and to the many other great football leagues across Europe. The eircom League of Ireland has grown over recent years and one measurement of this is the increased participation in European competition of our clubs. It is always a pleasure to meet with football people from different countries and we look forward to continuing to build-up relationships with other EPFL members over the coming years”.

History
“The eircom League of Ireland is the professional football league of Ireland. It is divided into two main divisions – Premier Division and First Division. The 2008 season saw the introduction of a third tier – the A Championship – which acts as a reserve team division underneath the First Division. The Premier Division currently has 12 teams, while the First Division has 10 teams. However, this will be changed for the 2009 season, with 10 teams entering the Premier Division and 12 competing in the First Division. The A Championship has 17 clubs – 12 from the Premier Division, 2 from the First Division and three clubs not previously represented in the eircom League of Ireland. The eircom League of Ireland runs throughout the summer months, beginning in March and ending in November. In late 2006, the clubs voted to merge the league with the Football Association of Ireland, meaning that the league is now run by the FAI.”
