Premier League Under 13 Tournament

Blackburn Rovers won the Premier League Under 13 Tournament at St Andrew's.Blackburn Rovers won the Premier League Under 13 Tournament at St Andrew's.

They beat Charlton Athletic on spot-kicks after a 1-1 draw at the home of Birmingham City.
It was their second successful sudden-death shoot-out of the day as they beat Coventry City by the same method in the semi-final.

Charlton got the better of West Bromwich Albion to earn their place in the final. The matches were 11-a-side, 20 minutes each way.

Regional tournaments had been held during the Easter holidays to decide which teams would contest the finals.

Competitive environment

Coventry won through at Warwick, Blackburn came out on top at Newcastle United, West Brom triumphed at Everton and finally Charlton went through on goal difference at Chelsea.
In the finals, the young players learned a lot from the new experience of playing in a Barclays Premier League stadium and in front of a crowd.

They also benefited from playing in a competitive environment where results mattered and with some involved in a penalty shoot out.

All in all, the event provided players and coaches with a different environment to test themselves, a welcome addition to the academy games programme and one that will be replicated in other age categories in the future.

Former Reading, Blackpool and Sunderland defender Steve Hetzke, the Premier League's technical monitor for the south, said: "The tournament went really well.

"The kids and the clubs got exactly what they wanted out of it, whether that was development of youngsters or experience of competitive football.

"At this level, results are not normally recorded as the emphasis at our regional festivals is on enjoyment and learning technique.

"But we set up this event in response to clubs saying they wanted some tournament football.
"Last year's pilot scheme was a big success and we have aimed to move it on this season. Virtually all the clubs enrolled for it and they all seem very happy.

"Tournament football is very different to what they have been used to. It changes the youngsters and the coaches but they have all learned from it.

"Some clubs used it as a development tool and some put more emphasis on winning. The boys love it and it is a good chance for the coaches to see how they cope."
