Launch ceremony of the "Professional Football against hunger" solidarity campaign
On 15 October 2008 the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Association of the European Professional Football Leagues (EPFL), representing the major 28 European Professional Football Leagues and more than 900 Clubs across Europe, will launch a campaign to raise awareness and funds in favour of the fight against world hunger.
The campaign, known as Professional football against hunger will be launched at FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy with the participation of Mr. Rocco Crimi, Under-Secretary in charge of Sport of Italy , Mr Jaime Lissavetzky Diez, Secretary of State for Sport of Spain, Mr. Reinhold Lopatka, Secretary of State of Austria.
From the Professional Football sphere, confirmed attendees are Mr Emanuel Macedo de Medeiros, CEO of the EPFL, Mr Antonio Mataresse, President of Lega Nazionale Professionisti, Mr Mario Macalli, President of Lega Italiana Calcio Professionistico (Italy), Mr José Luis Astiazarán, President of Liga Nacional de Fútbol Profesional (Spain) , Mr Tom Bender, Marketing and Communication Director of DFL Deutsche Fußball Liga GmbH (Germany), together with other high representatives from Liga Portuguesa de Futebol Professional (Portugal), Union of 1.SNL (Slovenia) and The Football League (United Kingdom).
FAO Goodwill Ambassadors, Roberto Baggio and Raúl Gonzalez Blanco together with football stars Dino Zoff, Rudi Vöeller and Fernando Couto will participate as testimonials.
During the ceremony, it is expected that the EPFL and FAO will announce the dates of a Europe-wide football weekend against hunger to involve League Members and Associate Members – altogether some 960 European football clubs.
In January 2009, Leagues' representatives, including well-known football players are also scheduled to visit countries in which FAO field projects are located.
Media are cordially invited to attend the launch ceremony at FAO headquarters at Viale delle Terme di Caracalla, Rome at 14, 45 pm in the Green Room (building A,1st floor). Arrangements for photo opportunities and interaction between podium and floor will be made.
NB - Accreditation will be at the FAO main entrance on production of a valid press card. In order to avoid queues, journalists and photo reporters are advised to arrive before 14:30h. There will be photo opportunities inside the Green Room prior to the start of the event on a first come, first served basis.
