he stressed. In this respect, Emanuel Macedo de Medeiros announced that, in line with the EPFL’s Declaration of Principles, the Association is proactively encouraging all its Member Leagues to develop rules and regulations “to improve the standards and financial management of their clubs, by enhancing national licensing systems and developing as appropriate other mechanisms aimed to ensure financial stability, transparency and enhanced supervision within a context of subsidiarity and proper role of the Leagues”. With this spirit, he announced that the EPFL has created a “Special Task Force on Good Financial Governance”, which is now examining the situation at the national level, identifying possible problems and best practices, in order to draw the necessary recommendations to the attention of the relevant bodies.
Whilst concrete details have not be disclosed, Medeiros highlighted that the EPFL is also developing a “Code of Best Practice on Recruitment, Training, Education and Protection of Young Players”, to ensure that young players receive the highest standards of welfare, development and continuing education, with the training clubs properly encouraged to conserve those talents in their squads and receive fair compensation for the investment made in their development, and also fight against trafficking and exploitation of young players.
Finally, the EPFL confirmed its firm commitment in cooperating with European political institutions and national Governments in areas where public policy is effectively and urgently needed for the positive development of sport and its social function, such as the protection of intellectual property rights for sports and their major events and the establishing legislation to regulate sports betting within the EU, preserving those intellectual property rights and allowing Sport to protect the integrity of its competitions from the challenges created by betting.
