The 36 clubs of the German DFL Deutsche Fussball Liga GmbH and their joint stock companies achieved record revenues in the 2010-11 football season, for the seventh year in a row. Despite the tough economic environment, clubs generated a total of 2.23 billion euros last season, with nearly 2 billion euros from Bundesliga revenues.
In the last four years the total clubs revenue has increased 18.9 per cent, with Bundesliga related incomes showing a growth of 24 per cent. The German League Association announced these figures during their presentation of the Bundesliga Report in Frankfurt am Main, on 25 January.
“The measures approved in August 2010 for improving cost control at clubs have paid off. With this in mind, professional football secures its chances to remain as a success story, also because the Bundesliga is more popular than ever among fans, sponsors and media partners” said Christian Seifert, Chief Executive Officer of the DFL executive board.
Professional football has recorded growth in all major income streams: Advertising, Media and Match Day revenues. After last year’s loss of 78 million euros, the Bundesliga managed to turn things around and achieved a net profit of 52.5 million euro.
In addition, the Bundesliga clubs reduced their liabilities by about 50 million euros, from 644 million euros to about 594 million euros. While, 2.Bundesliga clubs have decreased their losses about a 25 per cent, to 18.9 million euros in 2010-11 (25.3 million euros in 2009-10).
Just as in previous years, professional football has remained as a prominent taxpayer in Germany. The clubs and their joint stock companies have paid 719 million euros in taxes and duties (700 million euros in 2009-10). Furthermore, the clubs or their subsidiaries have remained as a large employer (as a whole) with more than 14,000 directly employed individuals.
