At the invitation of the German Pro Sports Initiative (IPD) many representatives from the world of politics, the sciences and marketing have gathered in Berlin to discuss the manipulation of sports betting.
They are focusing particularly on the methods of preventing such manipulation with a controlled market opening under a concession model and a repeal of the existing restrictions on advertising, whilst maintaining the proposed lottery monopoly.
In addition the controlled opening of the sports betting market has, according to experts such as
Professor Dr. Martin Nolte from the University of Kiel, led to sustainable revenue for amateur and recreational sports as well as the city.
"The professional sports are committed to the common position of German sports, the policies that were set out and the development under the German Olympic Federation. The retention of a dys functional sports betting monopoly has made it difficult to prevent betting manipulation, affecting the sports funding that is spread from top to bottom, said Christian Seifert, a spokesperson for IPD and CEO of DFL Deutsche Fussball Liga GmbH.
The German Pro Sports Initiative was founded in November 2009 in order to represent the four major professional sporting leagues in Germany (DFL German Football League, Beko Basketball League, the German Hockey League and TOYOTA Handball Bundesliga). The associations purpose is to address the concerns of professional sports as a single entity.
