Premier League Places for players

Bardsley's fitness drive on the Active BusSunderland defender Phil Bardsley joined a class on the SAFC Foundation's Active Bus.

Bardsley helped youngsters from Lambton Primary School learn about healthy choices on the unique bus as part of the Premier League's Places for Players initiative.  Active Bus, utilised mainly in SAFC Foundation's Fit for Football programme, is kitted out with equipment designed to illustrate the importance of exercise and staying active including an exercise bike, hand bike, heart rate monitor and body analysis machine.

Delivered to primary and secondary schools across the region, and to adults on SAFC's Family Learning programmes, the Active Bus can be taken to venues throughout the city including workplaces, events and public spaces to help address unhealthy lifestyles.

Physical Skills

The Black Cats star played his part via the Places for Players project, set up to promote clubs' community departments through player participation.

Phil Bardsley said: "The Active Bus is a great way of getting youngsters interested in healthy lifestyles.

"The fact that it's mobile means that it can turn up right on your doorstep and everyone can benefit and learn about the vital importance of exercise and treating their body right."

Between September 2009 (when the Active Bus was launched) and January of 2010, more than 1,500 young people have been engaged on the Active Bus. Of these, 1,002 report an improved knowledge of healthy choices, 905 improved physical skills and more than half report an increase in well-being.

SAFC Foundation's Active Bus is funded by Arriva, the Premier League Community Fund, Sunderland Primary Care Trust, and Sport England via the Active Sunderland Board.
